Glossary

  1. Risk?  –  Danger, bad things occurring, maybe you have got a problem and need to talk to someone.
  2. Risk management?  – Managing danger, it is different for everyone, things to stop bad things happening.
  3. Support plan?  – Plan that helps for the future, one to one, it is aimed to support you in certain aspects.
  4. Safeguarding?  – Rules to keep safe, residents are safe and secure while they live here.
  5. Policies and procedures? – Rules people need to follow and the way people have to follow them.
  6. Professional boundaries? – There are boundaries between you and staff. They’re friendly but not mates. Your friends are people you have something in common with.
  7. No secrets?  – Everyone (staff) is informed, if you are getting bullied or racist remarks tell staff, tell people if something is up.
  8. No preferential treatment?  – Everyone is treated the same, no different attitude to different people.
  9. Fair access?  – Anyone who is referred can stay at the hostel; everyone has the opportunity to stay here.
  10. Diversity and inclusion?  – Equality, because everyone is welcome.
  11. Fair Exit?  – Good, valid reasons for people to leave Contact, you won’t just be told to go, you can go if you don’t want to live here.
  12. Multi-agency?  – Contact, Connexions, Roundhouse, different people (and organizations) who help you..
  13. Informed decision?  – Making a decision knowing everything and other possible choices, you can think about it.
  14. Services and support?  – Services are for help, (something you can use to get help) and support is providing information and help to get your needs met.
  15. Respect and understanding?  – Accepting and learning about equality, when someone respects you too.
  16. Guidelines?  – Rules and regulations that the staff and service users must follow…guidelines are steps you must follow.
  17. Key worker?  – Someone to help you, a member of staff who works with residents discussing problems or issues that may occur, they give you support with things you might need to do or understand.
  18. Safe and secure?  – Away from danger, when an environment is protected, you feel safe in the house.
  19. Stable environment?  – A safe place where you always feels secure, a place people like to live in.
  20. Independent adult?  – A responsible adult, not relying on anybody else, take care of yourself when you are living on your own.
  21. Education or Training?  – Learning, college, apprenticeships, doing something to prepare for the future.
  22. Bullying?  – Making people feel intimidated/ nastiness, when you treat someone in a bad way, insecure.
  23. Good conduct contract?  – You agree to behave in a good way, it is something you read and agree to so that it is clear from the beginning that your behaviour will affect your life here at Contact.

What is abuse? What is an example of abuse?

  1. Violence – against someone, or making someone frightened of being hurt…
  2. Bullying - especially against someone who is smaller or more vulnerable than they are…
  3. Cyber-bullying – if someone is nasty on the Internet or by text…
  4. Financial – if someone takes money, eats your food, takes your clothes, ‘borrows’ but doesn’t return stuff.
  5. Physical – hurting someone, pushing, poking, hitting, kicking, biting, pulling hair…
  6. Mental – name-calling, making someone scared, telling lies, being two-faced, unfair…
  7. Sexual – touching someone in an inappropriate way without their consent or manipulating them to think they agree to inappropriate touching or conversation that is inappropriate…
  8. Inappropriate relationships – the boundaries between staff and Service User should be professional and it is clear that any relationship outside of Contact is unprofessional and may lead to the extremely serious issue of grooming and manipulation of vulnerable people, which may lead to the immediate dismissal of the staff member.
